AFRICAN DRUMMING

African Drummers from EOU came to Cove to share their talents.
More African drumming...
AP creates a beautiful design for her drum.
BT is caught up in his drumming.
Friends drumming together.
JD using her "monkey shaker" for a drumstick.
Now this looks like a real drummer...
Let's make music together!

BUTTERFLIES are HATCHING!

Look!
Eleven Painted Lady Butterflies hatched over the weekend. They're beautiful and drinking nectar from the lilacs we found on the school grounds.
LP and RB made a butterfly snack. We decorated a clothespin and then added a baggie of goodies for the wings. Yum...
BE and BT are trying out their new proboscises. What's that? It's a butterfly's tongue.
Is that your new proboscis?
I hope BB finds a flower soon! Did you know that a butterfly's tongue curls up just like a party blower? They uncurl it to reach deep inside a flower to sip the nectar.

CC's Kittens Come to Kindergarten

Oh, look. They're so cute...
Cuties!

We love kittens!

Mother's Day Butterflies

Happy Mother's Day! We love you!
Posted by Picasa
We are studying butterflies so butterfly hand prints were a perfect gift for our moms on Mother's Day. Our caterpillars have turned into chrysalises and soon should become butterflies.

May Day

Kindergarten girls are all ready for their big night at the May Day music program.
BE is all ready to sing! Now we just need the program to start!
RB makes a beautiful flower... the bees will be looking for her tonight. The kindergartners are all flowers during the May Day program. We also sing "I'm a Tambourine Kid" using the tambourines that we made ourselves.
KR and AP are waiting in the wings.
Welcome to Cove School, JM. We're glad your'e here! JM joined our class two days ago and jumped right in as part of our flower garden in the May Day program.
Three delightful flowers.
KB is grinning from ear to ear and showing off his missing teeth!

Nigerian Tribes: Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba

Our kinders and first graders all belong to a African tribe from Nigeria. QD is wearing his lion king tribal hat. You can tell by his tattoos that he is Yoruba. "Jambo sana jambo", QD is welcoming you to Africa.
Each girl in K-1 chose her own fabric for a head scarf. The scarf can be tied 3 different ways. These girls belong to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.

Hausa... notice how their tattoos are all alike.
CO, BE, and LP are collaborating on their Hausa tribal sign.
Happy Yoruba.
The Yoruba decided to paint their tribal sign.

Mrs. Young Goes on Safari

Mrs. Young came to kindergarten and first grade to show us photos she took on safari in Africa. She told us that her favorite African animal is the giraffe. She got to "talk" to them when she went on safari and she brought back a carved wooden giraffe. Thank you, KC, for inviting our special guest.
While Mrs. Young was visiting she shared many things that she brought back from Kenya and Tanzania. The children in K-1 all got to hold the carved wooden African animals.
This picture is made from dyed fabric. We liked the doll the girl in the picture is holding.
LP is amazed by the ostrich egg!
