Penguins

EH is exploring with ice and penguins during science.
More penguins... more fun...

Kindergartners roll play as they explore the icy world of penguins.
Can you find the Emperor Penguin?

See our penguins!

NP and AV make their penguins dive into the water and look for krill to eat.
Those penguins look pretty happy in icy Antarctica.
It's cold... look the ice is floating!

Snowman Snack

JM makes his snowman snack. He's using bananas for the snowballs, an apple and grape for the hat, chocolate chips for the buttons and the face, and pretzels for the arms. Yum...
Look at my snowman snack!
Here's AH's finished banana snowman.
Can I eat it now?
The boys are manipulating the words and characters in the Gingerbread Man.

How many letters in your name?

We made snowgirls! We used as many snowballs as the number of letter in our names. Stop by school and see all of our snow people above our lockers in the hallway.

BOXES

We have 12 boxes that we are using for many different things - tables and chairs, forts, cars, packages... whatever we can imagine. We've loaded and unloaded them in our covered wagon many, many times! Here we've stacked them into a tall tower.
Just look at the tower we made! We worked together to stack the boxes as high as we could.
Friends share a book...
The girls made a castle for their frogs! See them all lined up on the edge of the castle? But what's inside?

Look Ma, No Cavities!

The ODS dental hygentist students visit Cove to get experience checking teeth. This is a free service provided to our students.

Do You Flip?

Guess what we got for Christmas? Well, not really, but it sure felt like it! We got 2 new flip cameras in kindergarten. The 7th graders came to kindergarten today to show us how to use them and oh, what fun we had!
JK shows JM and JN how to operate the flip camera. They'll be taking videos in no time.
I think CR is loving this.
MS and TD look on as MH uses the flip camera. Notice the girls in the background also taking a video!
Just push this button ...
What's JM taking a video of?
FR and LE are both taking a video of Sugar Pop, our guinea pig.
TD watches his video.
EH is very carefully shooting her first flip video. It was a great day watching the big kids and little kids work together. Later the 7th graders will be back to help us edit our first videos that you'll be able to view right here on our blog.

New Student

We have a new student in kindergarten. AV moved to Cove from California. We're so happy that he's here!

Lockdown Drill

Today we practiced a lockdown drill. The procedure is for Mrs. V to lock our classroom door, pull down the shades, count the kindergartners to make sure everyone is safe, and then we need to continue with our routine VERY QUIETLY. Your children did a fantastic job during our practice. I had time to walk around and provide you with a snapshot of kindergarten activities during our lockdown. Enjoy... there's Lego aircraft.
Unifix cubes...
More Lego building...
Watercolors...
More painting...
Checking the phone book for the right number before you make that call ...
"Spin and Write" - a new math game ...
Coloring a gingerbread boy with markers ...
Sorting colored bear counters ... I think I see a pattern developing!
Sharing a favorite book ...

FROZEN KIDS AND FROZEN TREATS

It's freezing outside - it was 7 degrees when we put our juice outside to see if it would freeze enough to make popcicles. And it was cold enough - we went out an hour and a half later to find these frozen treats. Some weren't completely frozen but most were popcicles!
Here we are with our frozen treats!
Brrrr... who's idea was it to have popcicles on this freezing day? Let's go inside!
Wow... look at mine!
Yum, my stick came out. Can I eat it anyway?
