Smokey Bear Visits Cove

We got together in small groups to talk about fire safety.

The fire marshall tells this small group the dangers of playing with matches.
Feel the door to your bedroom first - if it's hot or warm don't open your door! Exit through a window.
We're inside the fire safety trailer listening about what to do if we have a fire in our home at night. Feel the bedroom door before opening it, stay low to the ground because smoke rises, and have a family meeting place.
Oh, that smoke alarm is LOUD!
The Cove Fire Department helps us escape through the window of the fire safety trailer.

Here we are at our meeting place - the mailbox.
Mr. Oliver is a fireman for the Cove Fire Department - this is how he looks before he puts on his face shield. If you are in a fire and he calls out to you, always yell back to him in your loudest voice so he can find you.
Mr. Oliver has on his mask - don't be afraid - he's here to help you.
What a perfect end to our day - a hug from Smokey.

CACTI

CK carefully draws his cactus. He is just like a scientist - he looks carefully at the details and then draws what he sees.
This is a close-up of JM's cactus. Can you see the spines? Careful... don't touch!
CR is using a loop to look closely at his cactus. The loop is much like one a jeweler uses - it magnifies the cactus.
JL's cactus is called "Blue Candle".
JN is carefully drawing his cactus. He discovered that his "Goldilocks" cactus has many small buds around the top.
This cactus is called "Eve's Needle". MH is making a careful observation of her cactus.
JM is looking closely - what do you think he sees?

LET'S DANCE!

Mimi is a visiting artist in residence dancer. She is doing many fun things with us all week - clapping, dancing, drumming, and moving our bodies to the beat!
CR claps out the rhythm of his name.
EH claps her response.

Oh, yah!
We CAN dance!
Listen to the beat...
The drummers drum their story.
Each drummer tells his own story as the dancers dance their story.
JM has the beat.
Go, go, go...
Drum, drum, drum...
MH has the beat, now the girls drum and the boys dance their stories.
Look at LE and FR drum. It looks like fun!
Go, KS, go!

BLUE MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE

Raptor skulls.
Carmine, a barn owl that imprinted with humans.
Ruby, the red tailed hawk.
Sage, the Great Horned Owl.
Raptor eggs.
K-1 students enjoy the presentation by Lynn Tompkins from Blue Mountain Wildlife. If you'd like to know more about her non-profit organization go to http://www.bluemountainwildlife.org/
Lynn talking about the Golden Eagle that was brought to her after it broke it's wing.
Lynn is demonstrating how a kestrel tries to keep it's head steady during a wind storm.
More about this little kestrel - sometimes prey, sometimes predator.
This Golden Eagle weighs about 11 pounds, it is North America's largest bird of prey. It is a carnivore that especially likes to eat rabbits. Notice his talons and sharp beak.
This Golden Eagle has a wingspan of approximately 7 feet. He was AMAZING.

100th Day of School

JM puts unifix cubes together to make 100 on the 100th day of kindergarten.
EH stamps 100 stamps on her 100 days headband.
JN and NP count to see if we really have 100 desert animals.
LE and FR made a 100 snack with 10 jellybeans + 10 Teddy Grahams + 10 raisins + 10 Cheerios + 10 chocolate chips + 10 peanuts + 10 pretzels + 10 MMs + 10 marshmallows + 10 Cheez-its = 100!
