Z Toad

OG is zipping the Z - we printed zippers with white paint to finish our "Alphabet Under Construction".

Mrs. VanNice arrived a school to find a box with a "mystery" in it on her desk.  We tried to guess what it could be and opened the box to discover a giant toad!

Our custodian found the toad hiding behind the garbage can outside our school.  Mr. Toad visited kinders, first, and second graders before we let him go again next to the creek.

GD counts goldfish as he tries to figure out how many of each color are in his cup.  After sorting the goldfish we measured sharks with them.  How many goldfish long is a leopard shark?

Looks like RH has his sorted.

Tree Planting

I got four trees for my birthday to plant at school from the Cove staff.  How wonderful!
Kinders planted two of the trees; a flowering plum (with double blossoms) on the playground and a Red Canada Chokecherry near the football field at the high school.

Digging the hole...

More digging...

Even more digging...

Isn't it beautiful with Mt. Fanny in the background?

EW adds some water.

What is it about little boys and water?  Gotta love it!

We carried several buckets of water over to our new little tree.

Time to fill in the hole!

It's lookin' good!

Next tree - we carried the water from the creek.

Here we are in front of the new chokecherry tree - it has white blossoms that smell wonderful.

Cove Kinders making the world a better place by planting trees.
Good job!

It really was a perfect day to plant trees - blue sky, green grass, and kids.  Can't beat that!

SEA TURTLES

As part of our Ocean Unit we studied sea turtles.  Each child painted a sea turtle, printed an ocean, and added facts about sea turtles to their finished product.  Stop by kindergarten to see what we've learned about sea turtles.

OG is cutting out his turtle shell before he adds the head, feet, and flippers.

Complete!

EW and KM are cutting out their sea turtle facts.

AD and JS too!

Squid Dissection

Ready to begin...

EW checks his squid - notice the 2 long feeding tentacles!

JS gets some help counting the arms.  Did you know a squid has 8 arms and 2 longer tentacles?  That makes 10!

Carefully taking out the beak.

RM puts the beak into his cup to take home.

RH holds up the lens from his squid's eyeball.  YIKES - he even eats the lens!

KM makes the single cut necessary to look inside his squid - he cut from the siphon to the tail.

AD is cutting her squid open too.  I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?

Cut right here...

Look at this!  JS cut the arms and head off his squid and now he has a calamari steak left!

Girl squid...  Can you tell someone how I know it's a girl?

Taking a closer look.

Hmmmm... I wonder...

Wow!

It's the pen!  Now, NS can write with her squid ink!

AD gives her 7th grade science buddy a squid ink tattoo.

KM gets a tattoo from his science buddy.

Time to eat calamari!  Did you like it?

I'm not sure if these girls liked the calamari or not?  What do you think?
