Squid Dissection

Ready to begin...

EW checks his squid - notice the 2 long feeding tentacles!

JS gets some help counting the arms.  Did you know a squid has 8 arms and 2 longer tentacles?  That makes 10!

Carefully taking out the beak.

RM puts the beak into his cup to take home.

RH holds up the lens from his squid's eyeball.  YIKES - he even eats the lens!

KM makes the single cut necessary to look inside his squid - he cut from the siphon to the tail.

AD is cutting her squid open too.  I wonder if it's a boy or a girl?

Cut right here...

Look at this!  JS cut the arms and head off his squid and now he has a calamari steak left!

Girl squid...  Can you tell someone how I know it's a girl?

Taking a closer look.

Hmmmm... I wonder...

Wow!

It's the pen!  Now, NS can write with her squid ink!

AD gives her 7th grade science buddy a squid ink tattoo.

KM gets a tattoo from his science buddy.

Time to eat calamari!  Did you like it?

I'm not sure if these girls liked the calamari or not?  What do you think?

SHARKS!

We're rough!
We're tough!
We're rough, we're tough.
We're SH-A-A-A-R-K-S!

Smell Like a Shark

Did you know that a shark can smell a drop of blood over a mile away?  We decided to test if we could identify different scents using our sense of smell.

RM decides which scent to test on his partner.

What do you think it is?

Here, smell this...

OG is really concentrating as he smells his next scent.

We had 7 different scents; orange, rootbeer, vanilla, garlic, coffee, cherry, and peppermint.  GD, what do you smell?

RH adjusts his blindfold.

NS carefully holds the cup to RH's nose.  We liked the smell of orange best, cherry was the hardest to identify, and we didn't like the garlic!

SMOKEY BEAR visits Cove

Fire safety when camping.

Good fire and bad fire.

We are listening so we know what to do if something catches fire in the kitchen.

Safety dollhouse.

Cove volunteer fireman CJ Ruth and Darren Hansen talk to us about fire safety.

CJ says that even if the fireman sounds like "Darth Vader" with his mask on; go towards him because he wants to help you!

Pluggy made an appearance!

RH gets a hug from Sparky.

We love you, Sparky and Smokey!

Goodbye and thanks for teaching us about fire safety.

KINDERGARTEN FUN

Mr. Olmsted made us a Y - we painted it yellow and yanked it on a pulley.

NS practiced writing her numbers during math tubs.

Several students worked together to create these awesome designs during math.  These polydrons will also make 3-dimensional figures.

At the car wash...

OG gets a wash with many different sponges at the student-made car wash!

EW looks pretty happy about the cleaning he's getting!
